We build strength, stability, self-reliance, and shelter.

About Us

Driven by a vision that everyone deserves a decent place to live, Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity builds affordable housing, revitalizes neighborhoods, and strengthens communities.

Families and individuals in need of a hand up can partner with Truman Habitat to build or improve a place they call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Everyone can help advance access to safe, decent, and affordable homes by working together providing financial support, volunteering, or becoming an advocate. Help us make the cost of a home something we all can afford.

Truman Habitat is one of Habitat for Humanity International’s affiliates working in nearly 1,400 communities throughout the United States and in more than 70 countries.

History

Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. It is a non-profit, ecumenical-Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work together building houses with families in need.

Purpose

Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations (HFH) will not proselytize, nor will HFH work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with HFH. This means that HFH will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must (i) adhere or convert to a particular faith or (ii) listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry dedicated to a vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. HFH conducts its programs in ways that are sensitive and respectful to cultural content, the local faith community, and reflects our belief that all are created in God’s image and deserve to be treated without discrimination.

Globally, faith-based organizations from all religions approach their work with a range of motivations that form their development approach. This policy is intended to ensure that HFH conforms to recognized global standards that clearly state that agencies may not condition the receipt of assistance or participation in their work on any requirement that people listen and respond to a message intended to induce people to join a religious movement, political party, or other cause or organization.

HFHI’s motivation is to unite people around the concept of “putting God’s love into action” along with others from all faiths or with no-faith convictions who are interested in helping those in need of improved shelter.

Engage a broad community through inclusive leadership and diverse partnerships.

How We Do It

Through volunteer support and tax-deductible donations of monetary gifts and building materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ low monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Donations

Donations designated to a specific building project are forwarded to that project. Any undesignated gifts are used where most needed. Our most recent audited financial statement is available upon request. Truman Heritage Habitat is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Management

Truman Habitat’s Board of Directors develop, implement and monitor the policies that allow the organization to carry out its work. The Truman Habitat board is elected by, and accountable to, its membership. Board members are dedicated volunteers who are deeply concerned about the problems of poverty housing in our community. We operate with an administrative staff that is assisted by a core group of clerical and support employees and supplemented by long-and-short-term volunteers.
