Thanks for joining our Truman Habitat team! When you arrive, we will greet you and sign you in. A staff member will then give you a quick rundown of what Truman Habitat is all about and give you a safety orientation. Safety is important, so attending orientation is a must.
Our supervisors will split the group into smaller teams, if needed, and walk you through the tasks for the day. If you feel uncomfortable with a task, let us know and we will find something that works for you.
A willingness to serve is all that’s required. Our projects are powered by enthusiastic volunteers who are eager to learn. Friendly construction supervisors will teach you everything you need to know. Let’s build together!
To volunteer for construction or renovation projects, you must be at least 18 years old.
Our construction volunteer days last around 6 hours, and we ask that you commit for the whole day. We’ll take water and lunch breaks throughout the day to recharge.
Truman Habitat adheres to local guidelines regarding COVID-19 safety.

You can cancel your volunteer spot by contacting the Volunteer Manager at 816-832-4569. The sooner you let us know, the easier it will be to open your spot to another individual.
Yes! Along with lending a hand on our construction sites, there are plenty of other ways to get involved. You can volunteer at our Restores, join one of our committees, or assist with special events. Our biggest funding source comes from generous local donations, which you may want to consider. Imagine if every volunteer chipped in $10, we could build an extra home each year! Everyone can make a difference in the lives of local families desiring a place to call home!
No, but we’d be happy to have you complete your court-ordered community service at one of our ReStores. The minimum age is 16 years to volunteer at ReStore. Truman Habitat only accepts community service for non-violent and non-theft offenses. It’s a great way to give back and have fun while you’re at it.

Daily tasks include:
- help receiving and sorting donations;
- providing excellent customer service and assist shoppers with their purchases;
- maintaining a clean, organized store environment;
- assisting with organizing, pricing, and selling donated materials, and home goods.
Our supervisors will split the group into smaller teams as needed and walk you through the tasks for the day.
If you feel uncomfortable with a task, let us know and we will find something that works for you.
To volunteer at our ReStores, you must be at least 16. Those under 18 need a waiver signed by a parent or guardian to volunteer.
ReStore Shifts:
Contact the ReStore staff to talk about scheduling your orientation and to discuss availability.
The ReStore is a warehouse environment, so please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Tennis shoes are great but leave the Crocs and flip-flops at home. Casual attire like a T-shirt with jeans or shorts (in the summer) is perfect. Just a heads up: it can get dirty, so don’t be surprised if you leave looking a bit different than when you arrived. Clothing must be appropriate – no cut-off T-shirts. We believe you have a belly button!
You may lift up to 50 pounds while working at our ReStores or assist with moving couches, big windows, and appliances.
If you have medical concerns – like pregnancy, or back issues, or if the physical demands are too much for you, make sure to inform the staff onsite. We want you to be comfortable and safe!
Truman Habitat follows local guidelines regarding COVID-19 safety.
If you can’t make your shift, let us know at least 24 hours before, if possible. Please contact our Volunteer Manager at 816-832-4569
The Volunteer Manager will contact you if the construction day is cancelled. Please check our ReStore Facebook pages for weather-related closings. If the store is closed, so is your scheduled volunteer time. Please be safe!
