Volunteer Opportunities
Individuals
We have great opportunities for individuals to volunteer. Some of the areas of need include construction, administration, and ReStore locations.
Groups
Volunteering as a group is a great way to get involved with your friends, church, or coworkers. Groups make excellent volunteers for construction and working our special events.
Corporate
Would you like your company/organization to get involved in the community?

About Our Volunteer Opportunities
Construction Volunteers
Volunteering on a construction site requires no previous experience. We will teach you all the building skills necessary on-site. We perform almost all tasks with our volunteers excluding foundation, plumbing, electrical, and roofing. We typically run construction every Wednesday through Saturday with some variations. You are more than welcome to gather a group and schedule a build with friends, faith community, or your job. An ideal-sized group is currently 6 or less. If you are not part of a group but would still like to volunteer on a construction site, we have many opportunities for individual volunteers. Construction workdays are typically from 8 am – 2 pm (summer) or 9 am to 3 pm (cooler months), and the tasks vary from week to week – anything from framing walls to installing doorknobs. Volunteers ages 16-17 years old are welcome alongside a responsible adult. They must have a waiver filled out by their parent/guardian to volunteer. Click here to print the waiver.
ReStore Volunteers
The ReStores are open six days a week (excluding Sundays) in both Independence and Blue Springs. They are a perfect volunteer opportunity for individuals who want to be up and moving but who also prefer to be indoors. Our ReStores rely heavily on the help of volunteers to minimize our overhead and maximize the support we provide to our affiliate, which ultimately helps us serve more families in need. The ReStore is a discount home improvement outlet that sells gently used items at discounts of up to 50-75% off retail prices. The tasks at the ReStore include receiving, sorting, cleaning, and organizing donated items, customer service, and other miscellaneous tasks. Please Note: You must be at least 18 to volunteer at the ReStore.
Carpet Inventory Preparation Team Volunteers
This is one of the most powerful uses of your volunteer time. We have a dire need for volunteers to process the large rolls of carpeting into manageable retail inventory. This is a critical step in turning donations into dollars that can be used in the construction of Habitat homes, weatherization, repair projects, and home ownership preparedness education programs. Your time will generate a major source of funds to help our families build strength, stability, and self-reliance.
We are looking for groups of 3-7 people to help with this mission-critical project. The process would include working with Independence ReStore management to cut large rolls into smaller lengths. Volunteers would need to be able to bend, crawl, and work/cut on a concrete floor in a minimally heated building and comfortably be able to lift 50 lbs. Typical shifts are 3 hours with breaks.
How Your Time Becomes Needed Funding
- Carpeting is cut into four to five 12’x20’ rolls that would retail for just over $100 each.
- In a 3-hour session, 3-5 volunteers can cut 20-30 pieces.
- 20 pieces at $100 each can bring in $2,000.
- 30 pieces at $100 each can bring in $3,000.
- Customers coming in for carpet also buy other items making it even more valuable.
Lunch Crew Volunteers
Our Lunch Crew program is a great opportunity for individuals as well as groups. If you choose to participate in the Lunch Crew program, you will be preparing and donating a lunch for our Habitat home-build construction volunteers. If you or your group chooses to participate here, you will be named an angel for a reason.
Administrative Volunteers
While Habitat is most well-known for the construction volunteer opportunities, our office help is equally as important. If you prefer a quiet office setting, we could definitely use your help! Office tasks can range from stuffing envelopes, answering phones, database entry, research, and more.
Special Projects & Committees Volunteers
Throughout the year, Habitat requires the help of additional volunteers for special events (fundraisers, women’s initiative, workshops, etc.). We also have committees that help with development, volunteer engagement, faith relations, finance, and more. If you have a special skill that you are willing to share, we could always use your help! Some examples may include photography, event planning, writing, public speaking, marketing, just to name a few.
Women Build Volunteers
Opportunities to work on Women Build projects are available to any woman who wants to learn how to build and construct a home. No experience is necessary. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals and alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners. Whether you are learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience for all involved and improves the community that you share.
Women Build is also a terrific way to involve your friends and family of all ages in crucial work with a lasting impact. Women helping women sends a positive and powerful message. You can also come alone and make new friends. The atmosphere is collaborative and friendly.
